BAYERO UNIVERSITY INAUGURATES MASS COMM FACULTY AND COMPLEX.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has commended the authorities of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) for elevating the institution’s Mass Communication Department to a Faculty.

The Minister made the commendation in Kano while inaugurating the Faculty of Mass Communication complex, which has 50 offices and the Broadcasting Complex, which houses the audio-visual studios, a computer laboratory and other facilities.

“They did not just do so by pronouncement,” the Minister remarked, “they have done so by providing the necessary infrastructure that will make it possible”.

Alhaji Mohammed also observed that the elevation of the department to a faculty showed the importance the university attached to Mass Communication and a commitment to be the foremost in Africa in the area of Mass Communication.

“We have seen the various studios, we have seen the Performing Theatre, we have seen the Academic Offices and we have seen the provision for the Post Graduate Students. So what BUK is actually telling us is that Mass Communication is too big to be a department and they are blazing the trail in making it a Faculty,” the Minister said.

The Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Muhammad Bello, disclosed that the institution was collaborating with the National University Commission (NUC) to review the current National Mass Communication Curriculum to reflect contemporary realities with a grant from MacArthur Foundation to enhance training and research in investigative journalism.

He added that management had ordered complete digital broadcasting equipment for the faculty radio station.
